| Description: |
| Applications are invited for a Bioinformatics Researcher to work jointly at the European Bioinformatics Institute, in the group of Ewan Birney and at the John Innes Centre in the group of Mike Bevan, on a project to assemble and analyse the sequence of a wheat chromosome.
The successful candidate will develop strategies for assembling and analysing Illumina, Sanger and 454 sequences of a wheat chromosome using Velvet and other relevant applications. This project will lay the foundations for the efficient and cost-effective sequencing of the hexaploid 16 Gb wheat genome. Wheat is one of the most important crop plants in the world and large-scale genome sequence is required to support gene discovery and molecular breeding, thus this project contributes to the development of future sustainable, high-producing crops. The size and complexity of the wheat genome is an exciting challenge for next generation sequencing and assembly methods, and the project offers substantial scope for highly innovative bioinformatics approaches. Further details of this project and the laboratories involved can be found and http://www.ebi.ac.uk/~birney/
The post holder will be responsible for developing and implementing bioinformatics approaches for the assembly and analysis of sequences from flow-sorted chromosome 3DL (approximately 500 Mb), and from whole genome nuclear DNA and cDNA sequencing. The aim is to achieve gene-scale assemblies and create approaches for larger-scale assemblies that deal with repeats.
Applicants should have a degree level qualification in biology, bioinformatics or computer science, and either a postgraduate-level qualification or a minimum of 1 years professional programming experience. The applicant should be expert in at least 1 modern programming language (e.g. Java, Perl, C++/C#); experience in handling large data sets would be advantageous. The post-holder will work jointly with scientists at the EBI and JIC, and frequent travel (approximately 80km) will be required.
The appointment will be as a Researcher and the salary will be within the range of £26,610 to £34,002 per annum depending on qualifications. This post also attracts an additional retention and recruitment allowance of £3,800 to £6,000. Further details of eligibility and reward package are available from
