We are looking for a talented and motivated bioinformatician to join our variation team on the Ensembl project at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI)
The team is responsible for building the variation databases for the Ensembl releases using a data integration pipeline in Perl; development and maintenance of the variation MySQL databases and Perl APIs; liaising with other members of the Ensembl team; user support including representing the Ensembl group nationally and internationally, teaching on API courses and presenting at conferences. Other duties include:
• Integration of new sources of variation data and functional annotation of variants.
• Working with members of the webteam and end users to develop effective ways of displaying the variation data.
• Developing new methods to exploit emerging variation data sets to improve the reference sequence of genomes important for biomedical research.
• Collaborating with international projects on and off campus (EGA, GEN2PHEN, 1000 Genomes).
The projects of the Vertebrate Genomics Team at the EBI includes the Ensembl project, the European Genome-phenome Archive and 1000 Genomes data coordination centre. This environment provides access to an international collection of projects at the cutting edge of research in human variation. The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is located on the Wellcome Trust Campus at Hinxton near Cambridge in the UK.
The post holder should have a Masters degree or PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, genetics or a related subject with significant experience in bioinformatics. S/he must be comfortable working in a UNIX/Linux environment and must have experience of Perl and relational databases such as MySQL. Experience with large datasets, genotype data or Ensembl code will be advantageous but is not required.
The successful candidate will be self motivated and capable of working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientists in an international academic environment. S/he should enjoy the challenges and excitement associated with working in a fast moving field and is able to deliver a quality product with fixed deadlines.
Excellent English, communication and interpersonal skills are required.
An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
